A 19-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder Tuesday night in a Monday shooting at a bus terminal underneath Denver’s Union Station.

Denver officers responded to reports of a shooting at the terminal in the 1600 block of Chestnut Place at about 9:51 p.m. Monday. Regional Transportation District staff were alerted to the shooting 10 minutes later.

Investigators believe the shooting victim, who has not been publicly identified, and 19-year-old Jakiem Whitham were fighting over a handgun when a shot was fired, according to a news release from the police department.

Paramedics took the woman to the hospital, where she is in “critical condition,” according to the news release.

Whitham was arrested on suspicion of attempted first-degree murder, felony menacing, first-degree assault with a deadly weapon, second-degree assault and use of a prohibited large capacity magazine, police said.

The 19-year-old is being held in Denver’s Downtown Detention Center and is scheduled to appear in Denver County Court later Wednesday morning.
