Life has a funny way of bringing things back full circle.
17 years ago, Sean Taylor was tragically murdered in his Miami home while protecting his family during an armed burglary.
Taylor was already one of the best at his position upon entering the league in 2004GettyThe 24-year-old was an All-Pro safety for the Washington Redskins and was well on his way to becoming an all-time great.
Taylor’s death in 2007 shook the sports world.
Since then, his legacy and impact have lived on, while the Washington franchise has done its best to uphold his name.
Washington has retired Taylor’s jersey No. 21 and announced last summer that a statue is being built in his honor.
While Taylor’s name is echoed throughout the DMV community, the Commanders did something over the weekend that brings his story full circle with the franchise.
Washington has extended an invitation to its rookie minicamp to Rice safety Gabe Taylor, the younger brother of Sean.
17 years after Taylor’s tragic death, the franchise in the nation’s capital has welcomed in his little brother.
The younger Taylor earned second-team All-AAC honors last fall with the Owls.
He led the team with 57 tackles and three interceptions, while also recording 10 passes defended, three sacks, and seven tackles for loss.
Just like his older brother, Gabe can be found all over the field.
Taylor was a standout safety for the Rice OwlsGetty In October 2021, Washington retired the No. 21 foreverGettyTaylor will get his opportunity to make a name for himself with the same franchise that his brother once played for.
He will have an uphill battle in trying to make the roster, as he will be coming in as an undrafted free agent, but there’s no reason why Taylor can’t compete for a roster spot.
He is more than talented.
Life has a funny way of bringing things back full circle.
And seeing another Taylor don the burgundy and gold threads almost two decades after the unimaginable tragedy, sure is another reminder.
One thing is for certain, there is a proud older brother up in the skies right now.
