Eugenio Suarez among MLB’s leaders in RBIs, drives in 4 runs in win over Blue Jays ...Middle East

Sport by : (Arizona sports) -

Arizona Diamondbacks third baseman Eugenio Suarez is pushing to lead Major League Baseball in RBIs, as he drove in four runs during a 9-5 win over the Toronto Blue Jays at Rogers Centre on Thursday.

Suarez came up a triple shy of the cycle on a three-hit day, as the D-backs avoided the three-game sweep after a walk-off loss and an 8-1 defeat. Pavin Smith also homered in the victory, while Ketel Marte delivered three hits.

Arizona is back to .500 at 37-37.

Pete Alonso leads MLB with 63 RBIs, while Suarez came out of Thursday’s game right behind him with 62. He’s driven in 14 runs over his last seven games, starting with a grand slam against the Seattle Mariners last week.

Suarez picked the offense off the mat in the second inning with an opposite-field, two-run home run off Blue Jays starter Kevin Gausman, whom he entered the game 4-for-19 against.

The blast was his 22nd of the year, which tied him with Kyle Schwarber for fourth in Major League Baseball. Two more, and he’ll enter the 300-home run club.

Suarez came back up in the fourth inning with two runners aboard and two outs, and he attacked a first-pitch slider for a two-run double. The veteran third baseman nearly drove in another run in his third at-bat, flaring a single to center field with Josh Naylor on second base, but the runner was held there.

He finished the game 3-for-5.

Suarez became only the fifth player in Diamondbacks history to rack up 20 home runs and 60 RBIs before July 1, joining Paul Goldschmidt (2015), Luis Gonzalez (2001), Steve Finley (200) and Matt Williams (1999).

The other four players made the National League All-Star team. Suarez was third among NL third basemen in the latest fan vote results and should compete for either a starting or reserve spot.

Ryne Nelson is back on track

Diamondbacks starter Ryne Nelson allowed a solo home run to Alejandro Kirk in the second inning and no other hits through 5.2 innings on Thursday.

Nelson came one out shy of a quality start, finishing the game with one run on one hit, two walks and four strikeouts. After an aberration seven earned runs allowed in Cincinnati on June 7, Nelson has thrown 10.2 innings with only the one earned run.

The right-hander has made six starts this season, and in five of them he allowed two earned runs or fewer.

His season ERA dropped to 3.88, and his WHIP fell to 1.08.

Josh Naylor ties career high

Naylor made it clear in spring training that he was going to set a new career high in stolen bases. Naylor swiped 10 bags in 2023 with the Cleveland Guardians, a mark he matched on Thursday with a stolen base in the fifth inning. He is on pace for more than 21 steals.

The only player in D-backs history who stole 20 or more bases while playing primarily first base was Goldschmidt in 2015 (21) and 2016 (32).

Having to use Shelby Miller

The Diamondbacks led 9-1 after the sixth inning, in position to avoid having to use higher leverage arms such as Jalen Beeks or Shelby Miller.

The Blue Jays, however, woke up against D-backs reliever Anthony DeSclafani, tagging him with four runs (three earned) in the seventh and eighth innings. Kirk hit his second home run of the game.

The D-backs opted to use Miller to lock down the ninth inning with a four-run lead, which could impact his availability in Arizona’s next game against the Colorado Rockies.

Miller used 16 pitches in a 1-2-3 ninth inning to finish the game.

Diamondbacks’ next game

The D-backs head to Denver for a three-game series at the Rockies, starting on Friday.

Zac Gallen will start the opener opposite of Colorado left-hander Austin Gomber, who made his season debut on Sunday after missing time with a shoulder issue.

First pitch on Friday is at 5:40 p.m. MST on 98.7 and the Arizona Sports app.
