The Denver Broncos reported last week for the start of voluntary workouts ahead of the NFL Draft as they prepare to transition into Phase 2 of the offseason program in a few weeks. Key free agent signing Dre Greenlaw suffered a quad injury while working out and will miss several weeks of the offseason program.
Denver Broncos LB Dre Greenlaw suffers quad injury while working out
On Sunday afternoon, it was reported by an NBC affiliate in San Francisco that newly signed Denver Broncos linebacker Dre Greenlaw suffered a serious injury and would miss significant time.
The report was not entirely true. Greenlaw did, in fact, suffer a quad injury while working out, but it’s not considered to be serious, as Mike Klis of 9News reports. It is a strain that won’t require surgery.
He’ll receive treatment at the team facility and will be working with Denver’s VP of Player Health and Performance, Beau Lowery, on a rehabilitation plan that will ease him back into things. This injury is not expected to impact his availability for the regular season at all, and he’s expected to be ready for the start of training camp.
After wrapping up the NFL Draft this weekend, the Broncos roster is mostly set as the team will hold rookie minicamp, OTAs, and mandatory minicamp before reporting in July for training camp. This injury occurred before the NFL Draft took place, and had the injury been a serious one, the Broncos more than likely would have added an inside linebacker during the draft.
Last offseason, Broncos inside linebacker Drew Sanders suffered an Achilles injury during April workouts, but returned in late October after having surgery. Denver drafted Jonah Elliss in last year’s draft after Sanders’ injury occurred.
This will be something to monitor as the offseason continues and training camp arrives, considering Greenlaw’s recent injury history. He suffered a torn Achilles in the San Francisco 49ers Super Bowl loss to the Kansas City Chiefs two years ago, and returned to play in two games last season before the 49ers shut him down due to calf soreness, tightness.
All things considered, the Broncos have been one of the healthiest teams in the NFL since Sean Payton and Lowery have paired up again, and knowing how Lowery works with players, Greenlaw is in the best hands possible with the treatment plan he’ll receive.
