DJ Uiagalelei is signing a free agent deal with the Los Angeles Chargers, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.
The former Clemson and Florida State quarterback went undrafted in the 2025 NFL Draft, but it took no time at all once the event came to a close for him to agree to terms on a deal with a pro club.
L.A. is settled at quarterback, with Justin Herbert set to lead the team in 2025. The Chargers signed Trey Lance to a 1-year, $6.2 million deal earlier this month. They also have Taylor Heinicke on the squad, and he’s the favorite to be Herbert’s backup next season.
SI’s Albert Breer speculated that Uiagalelei could move to tight end with the Chargers.

— Tom Pelissero (@TomPelissero) April 26, 2025A California native, Uiagalelei began his career at Clemson. After signing with the program as a 5-star prospect, Uiagalelei backed up Trevor Lawrence during his first season with the program and then assumed the starting job as a sophomore in 2021.
After 2 seasons with the Tigers, Uiagalelei transferred to Oregon State to play for coach Jonathan Smith. He had a career year with the Beavers in 2023, then hopped right back in the portal and returned to the ACC.
Uiagalelei signed with Florida State for the 2024 season. He appeared in 5 games, threw for 1,065 yards, and was picked off 6 times while throwing just 4 touchdown passes. He was sidelined for the remainder of the season with a hand injury and watched from the sidelines as the Seminoles limped to a 2-10 record.
The 6-foot-4 quarterback had a disappointing college career. But now he has a chance in the NFL to turn things around.
