Kylian Mbappe scored the first free-kick of his career – but it wasn’t enough to stop Real Madrid losing 3-2 to Barcelona in an epic Copa del Rey final.

In an enthralling encounter, it was the Blaugrana who nicked victory in closing minutes of extra-time at the Estadio de La Cartuja on Saturday night.

It was the LaLiga leaders that opened the scoring at Sevilla’s stadium in the 28th minute through Pedri’s long-range stunner.

But the momentum shifted after Carlo Ancelotti brought Mbappe on for the start of the second half.

And in the 70th minute, he notched up his 32nd goal of the season in all competitions with his first direct free-kick as a professional footballer.

He finally ended his 3,436 day wait in fine fashion – curling into the bottom left corner from just outside the box.

Just five minutes later and Aurelien Tchouameni headed Real into the lead to silence the Barcelona fans.

But they couldn’t hold onto their lead, with Ferran Torres equalising in the 84th minute, however the drama wasn’t done there.

Raphinha thought he had won Barcelona a penalty in the sixth minute of injury time, however it was ruled out by VAR, with Brazilian subsequently booked for diving.

A cagey extra-time followed, but it was the Catalan outfit that struck first thanks to Jules Kounde in the 116th minute.

And just when Barca supporters though the win was wrapped up, Mbappe won his side a spot-kick.

But for the second time in the match, it was eventually overturned due to Brahim Diaz being offside in the build-up.

The frustration was there for all to see, with Antonio Rudiger, who was substituted in extra-time, sent off after going berserk on the sidelines.

Rudiger had to be stopped by his teammates from getting on the pitch as he looked to confront referee Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea, who had been subject to intense criticism from Madrid in the build-up.

Replays also seemed to suggest that the German centre-back threw ice cubes at the match official, which leaves him at risk of further punishment.

Speaking after the match, a dejected Ancelotti said: “We played a high level game.

“It was so close. We were so close to winning it.”

Attention for Real will now turn back towards the LaLiga title race, where they trail leaders Barca by four points with five games to play.
