Eddie Howe was back on the touchline and watched his team bolster their Champions League hopes while relegating Ipswich. Re-live the game with the best facts and Opta stats in our Newcastle vs Ipswich Town stats page.
Ipswich Town’s inevitable relegation from the Premier League was confirmed by Saturday’s 3-0 defeat at Champions League-chasing Newcastle United, who went up to third thanks to victory.
Kieran McKenna’s Ipswich had long looked doomed to return to the Championship and only a win at St. James’ Park combined with a West Ham defeat at Brighton would have extended their stay of execution.
And although they almost held out until half-time, they were dominated pretty much right from the start, their task becoming even tougher when Ben Johnson was sent off for two bookings in the 37th minute.
Alexander Isak opened the scoring from the spot on the stroke of half-time to virtually put the game beyond Ipswich, with Dan Burn and William Osula completing the scoring in the second half.
Ipswich’s relegation ensures all three promoted teams go straight back down for the second season in succession.
Despite their dominance, it took Newcastle – who had manager Eddie Howe back on the touchline after suffering with pneumonia – a while to start really troubling the Ipswich goal.
Of their 10 first-half shots, only one – a Harvey Barnes effort that was blocked – occurred before the 35th minute.
Newcastle dedicated considerable focus to testing the Ipswich defence aerially, with their 23 open-play crosses before half-time being the third most by any team in the first half of a Premier League game this term.
Ultimately, it was a move of greater subtlety that led to the opening goal; Jacob Murphy looked to latch onto an incisive pass but was adjudged to have been pulled back by Julio Enciso, and Isak dispatched the resulting penalty.
That took the Swede to 22 Premier League goals for the campaign, a new career best for him over a single season.
Burn doubled Newcastle’s lead in the 55th minute, nodding in at the back post from Kieran Trippier’s teasing delivery.
Osula scored with a towering header of his own towards the end to make the scoreline more reflective of the hosts’ dominance, as they boosted their Champions League qualification chances by climbing up to third.
Their celebrations at full-time were in stark contrast to the misery written over Ipswich faces, with a miracle escape from relegation now mathematically impossible.
