(KRON) — A handgun equipped with an illegal attachment that gave the gun machine-gun-like firepower was seized during a traffic stop in the East Bay on Sunday, the Richmond Police Department said.
Officers with the department's Southern District were on patrol when they came across two men driving in a car with expired registration. The officers stopped the vehicle and allegedly found probable cause to search the car.
1 critically injured in SF Tenderloin apartment blaze; 2 dogs rescuedDuring the search, officers found two loaded handguns. Both handguns were illegally equipped with extended magazines, and one of the guns had the ability to be fired like an automatic weapon, the Richmond Police Department said.
“One firearm was equipped with an extended magazine and an illegal conversion device that allowed it to be fired fully automatic with the single press of the trigger, similar to a machine gun,” the Richmond Police Department wrote on social media.

Further investigation showed that the man had an outstanding warrant. The passenger had three out-of-state warrants with alerts stating that he is known to carry guns, Richmond police said.
Both suspects were booked on gun-related charges, including possession of a machine gun.
“This incident highlights the continued efforts by our weekend graveyard team and the Richmond Police Department to curb violence and remove illegal firearms from the streets of Richmond,” RPD said.
