With a forecast of rain, the nonprofit Friends of Los Angeles River (FoLAR) cancelled their Saturday, April 26 event that was expected to draw 500 volunteers to restore an acre of land in the Sepulveda Basin Wildlife Reserve by removing tons of invasive plants and trash.
The project to improve the environment in the 225-acre reserve in the San Fernando Valley has relied on a monthly volunteer day sponsored by FoLAR, the California Native Plant Society, and the San Fernando Valley Audubon Society.
The goal of the monthly volunteer day is to remove thousands of gallons of non-native species and noxious weeds to protect the health of the reserve. According to the San Fernando Valley Audubon Society, “In the 60s and 70s, forward-thinking citizens and planners envisioned a wildlife reserve in the (Sepulveda) Basin’s flood-prone areas to create a natural habitat for birds and small animals.”
A longtime goal is to restore habitats along the 51-mile river that begins in Canoga Park in the San Fernando Valley and flows through downtown L.A. and the Gateway Cities before reaching the Pacific Ocean in Long Beach.
