For most of Bay Area, light April showers will mark month’s final weekend ...Middle East

A somewhat rainy weekend is likely to wet down things far more in the South Bay and Central Coast then it will inland or along the North Bay, according to the National Weather Service. South of Santa Cruz County, isolated thunderstorms may occur.

That said, even the National Weather Service said it would not seem or feel quite as drab as a similar storm may feel in the winter.

“The marine layer is pretty robust, so it’s not being compressed,” NWS meteorologist Joe Merchant said. “As a result, the ceilings are a little higher. So instead of it being overcast and gray at 500 feet, it’s overcast and gray at 1,500 feet or 2,000 feet. So it’s not going to feel quite so dreary.”

Still, an approaching trough will hit land by Friday with its destination in the Central Coast and along Santa Cruz County, according to Merchant. The result of that is likely to be a quarter-inch of rain between Friday and Sunday for those areas and South Bay locations such as San Jose.

In the East Bay, the rain will be considerably less, Merchant said.

“At least some rain will fall there,” he said. “That would sort of be Friday evening into Saturday and again Saturday afternoon into Sunday. It’ll be real light. No real downpours. Just scattered light rain. Maybe one-tenth of an inch all told. The better confidence is south of there, really from Santa Cruz on down.”

The landing point for the trough originally was anticipated to hit farther up the coast, but Merchant said the upper-level system that preceded it has pulled the trough farther south.

The rain will be accompanied the cooler temperatures that began Wednesday. The high temperatures are not expected to escape the low 60s, and most cities won’t even get that warm, according to the weather service.

“Early next week, probably Monday, we have a nice warm-up,” Merchant said. “Once the rain starts to clear out, we have a nice warm dry trend into the extended forecast.”
