“I regard the theater as the greatest of all art forms, the most immediate way in which a human being can share with another the sense of what it is to be a human being.” – Oscar Wilde
UPT event
Since 1997, Ukiah Players Theatre (UPT) has brought fun, joyful, insightful, poignant productions to our little berg.
We have also raised up a new crop of exceptionally talented folks and one of them, Hannah Peterman, makes her debut as director of “Anne of Green Gables,” opening April 25-May 18.
Hannah reflected on this new role in her life.
“This is my current project and I’m proud to invite all of you to come and see it! Becoming a director has grown me as I have gotten to use skills I didn’t know I had. I am thankful for my friends who have come to paint and build and sew alongside me. I feel very blessed to bring one of my favorite books to life. I’ve intentionally designed this show to be engaging and perfectly appropriate for all ages.”
Tickets are available at the link below, or by calling the UPT Box Office at (707) 462-9226. ukiahplayerstheatre1.thundertix.com/events/237182

Spring Dance Festival
Eryn Schon-Brunner is director of a vibrant showcase of original dance works, live music, and stunning visual arts May 1-4, at Mendocino College Center for the Performing Arts Theater (1000 Hensley Creek Road, Ukiah). All tickets $15, available at the door, Mendocino Book Company, or online at www.artsmendocino.org. Shows at 7:30 p.m., Sunday at 2 p.m.
Something magical happens when collaboration of various elements combine when a new dance premieres. All the individual elements – pianist (Lars Brunner), dancer (Rocio Ramos), costume designer (Kathy Dingman-Katz), and stage – merge to create a unified whole. Next week, Lalo-Eduardo Torres will complete the work with lighting. Feeling grateful for the creative artists in our community!

Las Cafeteras
Ukiah Community Concert Association welcomes Las Cafeteras for the very grand finale of the UCCA 2024-25 season. The show is at 2 p.m., Sunday, May 4, at Ukiah High School Cafetorium.
This band has performed around the world, made numerous albums and videos. Their music and vocals are super-charged with melody and meaning, and there will also be dance, storytelling, poetry, and theatrics.
Seven musicians make up the band for their local appearance, and instruments include the 8-string Jarana, the 4-string Requinto, Quijada (donkey jawbone), and Tarima (a wooden platform), along with bass, synthesizer, and percussion to create a sonic explosion of joyous music and words.
Committed to immigrant rights, gender justice, environmental justice, and Black Lives Matter solidarity, they proudly declare, “The movement for Peace & Justice has always been filled with music, and we intend to be part of the Soundtrack.”
Tickets for non-season subscribers are $35 in advance and $40 at the door, if not sold out. Advance tickets are available on the UCCA website and at Mendocino Book Company in Ukiah and Mazahar in Willits.

Calaveras Fair and Jumping Frog Jubilee
Frog jumping is a competitive pastime for humans in which frogs are entered into competitions to jump certain distances. Frog jumping contests are held in small communities scattered around the United States, as part of the folk culture.
Frog jumping was made famous in a short story called “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County” by Mark Twain, an event held annually in Angels Camp, in California’s Calaveras County, since 1928, with other events held in Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, Washington, Maine, Missouri, Louisiana, New York, Wisconsin, and also in Manitoba, Canada. The Calaveras County Fair & Jumping Frog Jubilee is one of the longest running events in the State of California. Its earliest roots date back to 1893.
The Jumping Frog Jubilee is held the third full weekend every May at 2465 Gun Club Road, Angels Camp, Calif. For more information, phone (209) 736-2561 or info@frogtown.org
