The process to redraw Weld County’s districts will soon be underway after the commissioners named the nine-member committee tasked with developing three maps for approval by July 30.
The commissioners on Wednesday appointed nine county residents to the committee:
Julie Cozad of Milliken, Republican Zoe Hubbard of Fort Lupton, unaffiliated/third-party Dawn Kafes of Frederick, Democratic Dave Long of New Raymer, Republican Lane Mattox of Greeley, unaffiliated/third-party Adrienne Sandoval of Platteville, Republican Sonny Subia of Greeley, Democratic Stacy Suniga of Greeley, Democratic Brandon Wark of Greeley, unaffiliated/third-partyThe county has been required to redraw the commissioner districts after the Colorado Supreme Court found that the county’s redistricting in March 2023 failed to meet the requirements set out by state law. The law requires additional criteria and processes for redistricting that were not followed.
The boundaries must be redrawn based on data from the most recent United States Census, a Weld County news release explains. The committee will develop three commissioner district maps for consideration and approval by the commissioners by July 30.
The committee will determine when and how often it meets, which will be listed on a redistricting webpage, bit.ly/WeldRedistricting25. All of the committee’s meetings will be open, allowing the public to attend in person or virtually. County residents may submit comments about the process at the committee’s meetings or via a digital comment form at any time.
All comments that are submitted will be posted on the public comments page for residents to view.
The committee will present three maps in a public hearing on June 30, and three additional public hearings, which will include virtual options, will be held July 9, July 16 and July 3 before the commissioners adopt the official map.
