A two-story Canoga Park home designed to naturally heat and cool itself is on the market for $2.5 million.

Known as an Earthship, this house spans 3,607 square feet with three bedrooms, two bathrooms and an open-concept floor plan “redefines luxury through sustainability, harnessing the earth’s ambient temperature and passive solar heating to achieve near-total energy self-sufficiency,” the listing reads.

The great room combines the living and dining areas and the gourmet kitchen, which features Thermador appliances, breakfast bar and ample counter and storage space.

Views abound from the pergola-covered patio just off the great room.

There’s a second-story family room with a ceiling-mounted, drop-down projector screen.

The house has two primary bedrooms, including one on the second story with a fireplace, a sitting room and an attached bathroom with a walk-in double shower.

Both bathrooms have undergone a luxury remodel since, records show, the property last sold in February 2023 for $1.525 million.

Matt Witek and Jonnelle Lewin of Compass share the listing.

Completed in 2002, this Earthship is built into the hillside and features south-facing windows. The thick, load-bearing walls are constructed from earth-packed tires that are pounded into place like bricks.

These walls store heat when the sun hits 120 linear feet of floor-to-ceiling windows, radiating warmth into the great room and beyond as temperatures drop.

In summer, the interior stays cool as warm air rises up and out through the home’s 10 operable skylights.

Earthship is the brainchild of environmental architect Michael Reynolds. He first conceived the off-grid concept after graduating from the University of Cincinnati in 1969.

The idea was a response to widespread concerns over pollution and the lack of affordable housing, as reported by the Southern California News Group in December 2022 when the same property listed for $1.495 million.

Reynold collaborated with the original owners, who sold the house to the current owners, on this one of a kind property in California. It is set among native and other drought-tolerant plants, water features and paths on a 2-acre lot designated a National Wildlife Federation Certified Wildlife Habitat.

The house and a detached two-car garage have fire-resistant roofs. Also able to withstand fire are the home’s exterior metal-framed windows and the pergola.

Solar panels help power the house.
