Emmy-winning journalist Paola Ramos will share insights from her best selling book on Latino political identity at a free University of San Diego lecture next week.
The May 1 event, part of a series, will dive in to Ramos’s 2024 book “Defectors: The Rise of the Latino Far Right and What It Means for America” to explore how Latinos could define the future of American politics.
In her book, Ramos says tribalism, traditionalism, and political trauma within Latino communities in the United States has been weaponized to radicalize and convert voters who are fearful of losing their place in American society.
Following Ramos’s 90-minute lecture, Andrew Blum, executive director of the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice, will moderate a Q&A session.
The first 100 guests to arrive and check-in at the event will receive a free copy of the book, and will have the opportunity to get it signed after the main event.
Ramos is a contributor for Telemundo News and MSNBC, and a former correspondent for Vice News.
Prior to her journalism career, Ramos was the director of Hispanic media for Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign, a political appointee during the Obama administration, and served in then-President Barack Obama’s 2012 re-election campaign.
She also authored “Finding Latinx: In Search of the Voices Redefining Latino Identity” in 2020.
The lecture is open to the public and will start at 6:30 p.m. in Mother Rosalie Hill Hall.
