Why Darwin Nunez may not start another game for Liverpool and it would cost Benfica millions ...Middle East

Darwin Nunez’s contract fine print could mean that Benfica miss out on a significant payment from Liverpool if the Uruguayan international doesn’t start again.

The Portuguese side’s former striker arrived at Anfield in the summer of 2023, but has failed to cement himself as a first-team regular.

At the time, Nunez was transferred for an initial fee of £64million, but with the possibility of the deal reaching £85m, through bonuses.

The transfer agreement between the two clubs has been subject to speculation, with neither Benfica nor Liverpool confirming the exact breakdown of the additional fees.

A report in Portuguese media outlet, A Bola, suggests that Benfica could lose out on €5m (£4.2m) if Nunez does not start another game for Liverpool.

They claim that the Portuguese club received €5m each time the forward reached a milestone number of starts in the Premier League and Champions League, beginning with €5m for 10 starts, then another €5m when Nunez reached 35.

It has been reported that a further €5m will be paid to Benfica if and when Nunez reaches 60.

The Uruguayan, who currently has 59 starts for the Reds, has struggled to hold down a place in Arne Slot’s squad this season.

He has appeared in the starting XI only once since February, when he scored at Anfield in a win over Southampton.

As the season draws to a close, the opportunities for Benfica to secure another bonus from their former striker are declining and Nunez’s future at Liverpool is in question.

Liverpool legend Mark Lawrenson believes the side will sign ‘four or five players’ to strengthen their title-winning side.

Mohammed Salah and Virgil van Dijk’s contract renewals will provide a solid foundation for a successful transfer window.

But Lawrenson claims they’ll let Darwin Nunez go and replace him with another striker.

Reports emerged earlier this year around Liverpool’s willingness to sanction a sale, just three seasons after Nunez’s costly arrival.

talkSPORT reported in March that Spanish side Atletico Madrid were among clubs eager to offer Nunez a new home.

While Nunez’s future at Liverpool is uncertain, the Premier League title is all but guaranteed for the club, who need just three more points to secure victory.

The Reds have been edging towards the crown and they may not need to be on the pitch to win it, if Arsenal fail to beat Crystal Palace tonight.

A defeat for the Gunners this evening would mean they could only reach a maximum of 78 points, one less than Liverpool’s current 79.

If tonight’s game at the Emirates is a draw, Liverpool will need to secure one point on Saturday in their game against Tottenham.

However, regardless of Arsenal’s results, Liverpool only need one more win to secure the Premier League title.
