For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.
Two-time Florida high school state champion Karrington Hansen announced her verbal commitment to swim for the University of Kentucky beginning in the fall of 2026.
“I’m thrilled and honored to announce my verbal commitment to continue as a student-athlete at the University of Kentucky! I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to my family, friends, and everyone who has helped me get to this point by providing unwavering support throughout this process! Special thanks to Coach Fred Lewis for his endless support; forever grateful! Also, a huge thank you to Coach Lundgaard and the entire Kentucky coaching staff for this incredible opportunity to continue my journey down “The Kentucky Road”. I’m beyond excited! Go Cats!!”
Hansen is currently a junior at St. Petersburg High, where she has been a member of the varsity swimming and diving team all three seasons. A versatile threat in the water, she also trains year-round with St. Petersburg Aquatics and primarily specializes in free, back and IM.
At the Florida High School Class 3A State Championship back in November, Hansen secured two championship titles. She won the 100 free in a lifetime best time of 50.43, over half a second ahead of the runner-up, and helped her team to a victory in the 400 free relay. Hansen also took 4th in the 200 free, throwing down a personal best time of 1:48.22, and turned in a best time in the 50 free (23.78) leading off the 200 free relay.
Hansen recently competed at the Florida Senior Championship (SCY) in March, where she posted a series of best times and landed multiple Futures cuts. Hansen’s top swims included a runner-up finish in the 200 back (2:00.21 – PB), a 4th-place finish in the 200 IM (2:02.87 – PB), a 5th-place finish in the 200 free (1:47.85 – PB) and an 11th-place finish in the 50 free (23.69 – PB), all Futures qualifying times. She also placed 8th in both the 100 free (51.04) and 400 IM (4:26.06).

The Wildcats sent three women on to compete at the NCAA Division I Championships, where they placed 50th overall.
To earn a second swim at the 2025 SEC Championships, it took times of 22.40/48.82/1:46.68 in the 50/100/200 free, 1:55.25 in the 200 back and 1:59.04/4:14.85 in the 200/400 IM, putting Hansen just outside the cutoff in her top events.
Hansen would have ranked 5th in both the 100 and 200 free on Kentucky this past season, and she also would’ve been 7th in the 200 IM and 8th in the 50 free. With another year before she arrives in Lexington, we will have to wait and see how the roster shakes out to see where Hansen lands, but two of the swimmers faster than her in the 100/200 free will have graduated by the time she arrives.
“I chose Kentucky because it felt like home,” Hansen said. “The family atmosphere and uplifting team culture were unmatched, as well as the amount of support the coaching staff has shown me throughout this process.”
Hansen is currently the Wildcats’ only confirmed women’s team commit for the 2026-2027 season thus far.
