Martin Brundle can melt even the coldest of hearts in seconds, as he once proved at the Saudi Arabia Grand Prix.
The former Formula 1 driver and grid walk icon faces plenty of challenges when he traces up and down between cars, and in 2023, it was trying to get access to Will Smith.
Brundle thought he had snagged the biggest name on the grid but was blocked in 2023F1Brundle was making his way past Lewis Hamilton’s Mercedes in Jeddah ahead of the race when he spotted the Brit’s good friend and iconic actor.
However, once he made it to the star of I, Robot and I Am Legend, in stepped a very efficient security guard to block his path.
“I’ll see if we can have a word with Will,” Brundle said. “Yeah I know I think we’re all organised, it’s OK.”
Straight on the scene was Mercedes communication director Bradley Lord who had to let the individual know who he was dealing with.
“One question, yeah?” Brundle said as the waves parted, “Plus VAT.”
Having spoken to Smith, the security member then showed plenty of respect for Brundle, showing just how revered the pundit can be in the space of just minutes.
“Alright, I think my one question is over,” Brundle said before turning to an apologetic and thankful security member.
“Thank you very much,” he said. “My pleasure, thank you very much. Top man.”
Brundle doesn’t always have such luck, being stopped from talking to the likes of sporting greats Shaquille O’Neal and Kylian Mbappe, but often putting security members in their place.
During the Mbappe incident at Monaco in 2023, he told the guard: “It’s alright, mate I’m in charge around here,” before getting in a brief chat with the France captain.
There was a wholesome moment as the security showed some class with the F1 legend Smith also showed some grace by deflecting a tricky questionF1Will Smith, though, was much more accommodating despite being one of the most famous faces on the planet.
Becoming a household name in the 1990s on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, he’s regularly attended F1 events alongside Hamilton and also went viral with a hilarious skit with the seven-time champion.
Yet his recent career hasn’t been so busy, something Brundle awkwardly stumbled upon while talking to the megastar.
Smith’s acting career has been derailed since his shocking slap on Chris Rock at the Oscars in 2022, so when Brundle asked if he’d be starring in the upcoming F1 movie, he managed to bat it off smoothly.
“I haven’t been asked yet, but I’d love to,” he said. “I might have to work on this gut though, it doesn’t fit in the car too well.”
Smith also referenced a long night out with Hamilton, which was much needed after a poor eighth place in qualifying.
Hamilton did manage to climb to fifth in an event won by Red Bull’s Sergio Perez, but likely had more fun out with Smith than he did on the circuit.
