Cricket Scotland’s chief executive, Trudy Lindblade, revealed that discussions are now underway with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and it is almost confirmed that both the boards will join hands for a unified British cricket team for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. This development comes as cricket prepares for its Olympic return after a 128-year absence, as the game was last featured in the Paris 1900 Games. Earlier, after ECB’s spokesperson’s positive talks, now Scotland has also shared their optimistic response on the concept.
Unified Team GB concept
The LA28 cricket tournament will feature six-team men’s and women’s T20 events, with each team having a 15-member squad. Lindblade shared with the BBC, “We have a really good working relationship with the ECB, so we have been in talks with them and are in the process of establishing a Team GB cricket entity instead of only England.” This move aligns with the British Olympic Association’s (BOA) requirements for British teams at the Olympics.
Current rankings and opportunities
England is currently ranked second in men’s T20s and third in women’s, while Scotland is not in the top ten for either format. The collaboration is aiming to make a strong side with both boards. “So it’s really interesting – with six teams in the competition, we would have an opportunity through the GB concept,” Lindblade added. According to the Scotland board, the unified effort represents a chance for growth and increased visibility for cricket on the global stage.
ECB’s take on GB team
The ECB expressed a positive view, and they are ready to have further discussions. A spokesperson mentioned, “With England and Wales also set to host World Cups in 2026 and 2030, LA 2028 presents another great chance to grow the game and inspire new audiences.” This collaboration is seen as an important one to widening cricket’s global appeal.
Historical context of Great Britain team at the Olympics
Within the Olympics, athletes from the UK traditionally compete as a unified Team GB, which is Great Britain, except in men’s football, where internal disagreements have limited representation since London 2012. However, the BOA (British Olympic Association) hopes to field a unified men’s football team at the 2028 Games, and is trying to put all the sports under the Great Britain Team.
