Mark Allen stormed off in a fit of rage after missing a simple black in the 2024 German Masters.

The Northern Irish snooker star clinched a 5-4 victory in his first round clash with Thailand’s Manasawin Phetmalaikul, but it was his emotional outburst which fans are most likely to remember.

After moving into a 3-2 lead in the first-to-five contest, Allen soon found himself trailing 62-11 in the sixth frame.

However, he had a chance to take the frame when he was given the opportunity to go back to the table, potting the red to then set himself up for a routine black.

But things went wildly wrong here, as ‘The Pistol’ missed by a long way, and he was unable to hide his frustration.

As the black bounced between the jaws of the pocket, Allen threw one of the red balls across the table.

He then chucked his cue onto the table before storming off in disappointment to officially concede the frame, despite there being enough points available for him to claw his way back.

With 59 points left on the table and Allen trailing by 51, he broke the snooker Rules of the Games by conceding.

Section 4.2.A states: “A player shall not concede a frame in any game, or match unless any player requires penalty points. Any breach of this rule shall be regarded as unsporting conduct by the player concerned.”

The rules state that in the event of unsporting conduct, the referee will warn the concerning player that in the event of any further unsporting conduct the game will be awarded to their opponent.

Allen’s actions therefore allowed Phetmalaikul to level things up at 3-3.

And despite going on to fall 4-3 behind, the two-time UK Championship winner later regained his composure to fight back.

He sealed a 5-4 victory thanks to a century break in the final frame to set up a clash with Louis Heathcote in the next round, where he cruised to a 5-2 win.

But there was to be more drama in store for Allen in his following match, when he faced off against Joe O’Connor.

After falling behind 2-1, the 39-year-old had the chance to take control of the fourth frame after a foul from O’Connor, but failed to sink the pink along the top cushion.

Again, this sparked a furious reaction from Allen, who smashed the table with his hand, to the surprise of the Berlin crowd.

The 2018 Masters champion made his way back to his seat with his head in his hands, although he was later let off the hook by his opponent, who also missed a pink.

As in his clash with Phetmalaikul, Allen finally managed to find his groove, taking the fourth frame 63-42, before going on to claim the next three frames to win the match 5-2.

This set up a round of 16 encounter against four-time world champion John Higgins, but Allen was unable to draw on any more of his comeback powers.

Higgins stormed to a 5-2 victory to advance into the quarter-finals, where he was beaten by eventual tournament winner Judd Trump.

As for Allen, his round of 16 exit meant he was unable to better his best-ever run at the German Masters in 2022, where he reached the semi-finals.

Despite this, he went on to enjoy a strong 2024, winning the Players Championship in February.

Despite a second round exit at the World Championship that year, Allen’s consistency in recent seasons was later rewarded as he ended the campaign in world number one, becoming the first Northern Irishman to achieve the feat.
