They will look to rebound after winning two Super Bowl titles in a row.
On Thursday, the Chiefs’ GM Veach spoke to reporters and shared his thoughts on the upcoming NFL Draft.
Veach revealed that the team will be targeting a wide receiver and a running back with a specific skillset.
“Ideally, it would be advantageous to us to identify a receiver and running back that has explosive ability on both ends (offense & special teams return game),” he said, per A to Z Sports’ Charles Goodman.
Veach didn’t rule out targeting other positions.
“From a 1,000-foot view, it’s probably safe to say that offensive line, defensive line and cornerback [are areas] where the draft has some numbers,” Veach said.
“I think that would be a logical landing spot for us early in the draft, but I think we’re always in the mindset to add players that we have graded as impact players, and we certainly wouldn’t shy away from continuing to add to our receiver room as well.”
The Chiefs have the No. 31 overall pick in the first round and have a recent history of moving up to secure their guy.
They traded up four spots to select wideout Xavier Worthy in Round 1 of last year’s Draft.
While Veach didn’t rule out moving up in this year’s Draft, the Chiefs have fewer first-round grades than in years past, and the “secondary wave” of players is stronger compared to previous drafts.
“Last time I checked, [we had] 12 or 13 [players with first-round grades],” Veach said.
“That’s lower [than in the past], but that secondary wave of guys that are in the late first-round, high second-round consideration is probably a little higher.”
Veach didn’t rule out the possibility of one of their 12 or 13 first-round graded players being close to their spot, as a similar situation happened in 2022 when they moved up for star cornerback Trent McDuffie.
Andy Reid and the Chiefs will look to upgrade multiple positions as they may draft either an offensive tackle or a pass rusher with their first-round pick.
Veach mentioned that the running back class is deep, but that the defensive line, specifically edge rusher, is another position group in which this draft has talent.
And the Chiefs, coming off a Super Bowl in which they allowed six sacks, traded away the versatile All-Pro offensive lineman Joe Thuney.
They did sign left tackle Jaylon Moore, but the franchise has mostly had a quiet offseason.
