Anaheim investigators have recovered two sculptures by Sir Daniel Winn, the newly appointed art commissioner of John Wayne Airport, that are valued at more than $2 million combined, days after the valuable art pieces were stolen from a secure facility.
Community tips helped lead police on Friday night to a trailer where the sculptures were hidden, Anaheim Police Sgt. Matt Sutter confirmed on Sunday.
The sergeant said police are not releasing the address of the home where the trailer was parked, since it is still an active investigation. No arrests had been made as of Sunday afternoon, Sutter confirmed.
The two sculptures had been stolen from an unmarked facility in the Anaheim Hills that would become Winn’s new showroom. Given the nondescript nature of the commercial site — which is currently undergoing renovation — and the fact that that pieces had only recently arrived at the building, investigators believe that someone tied to the theft had to have known the art pieces were being held there.
Police also believe the thieves used a forklift and other construction tools at the site to move the heavy sculptures. Winn, in a previous interview with a Southern California News Group reporter, said that when he does an installation it typically takes a least a dozen men to move the sculptures using forklifts and trucks.
The sculptures were taken sometime over the previous weekend, between when Winn left the locked facility on Saturday night and when he returned to find them missing on Monday morning.
Winn — who was appointed to the John Wayne Airport Arts Commission last month — said he considered the two pieces the thieves targeted as his legacy.
The first — titled “Quantum Mechanics: Homme” — is a steel, bronze and lucid 8-foot-tall creation depicting a winged and horned man. Winn says it represented his view of universal truth and the meaning of life. The piece — which weighs 4,000 pounds, is valued at $1.8 million.
The second piece — titled “Icarus Within” — depicts the Greek mythological figure of the same name who, legend tells, fell from the sky after flying too close to the sun. Winn has explained it represented his struggle to become a successful artist and fulfilling a promise he made to his grandmother to follow his dreams. The 8-foot-tall sculpture is valued at $350,000.
“Quantum Mechanics: Homme” was featured in an award-winning short film, “Creation,” in 2022, while “Icarus Within” was featured in a biographical movie about Winn’s life that recently finished principal photography.
