Eventually he decided to transfer to UCLA, but didn’t get anywhere close to the deal he was looking for.
Reports indicate that Iamaleava only received a $1.5 million deal upon transferring to UCLA.
That was already less than half of what he was seeking, but it gets worse for him.
Thanks to California taxes, that deal will drop to about $800,000 by the time it’s in his wallet.
Iamaleava ended up getting less than a fourth of the money he was looking for.
He didn’t end up with a great program either, as UCLA isn’t known for producing great offensive talent.
The last time UCLA produced an offensive Pro Bowler was Marcedes Lewis in 2006.
NFL legend Cam Newton thinks that players should look at Iamaleava as an example of what not to do in college.
“This is a story of good advice, bad advice,” Newton said on the 4th and 1 podcast.
“Whoever advised this kid to sit out and chase in hopes for more money is a fool.
“Because the reality is this… is just to make your college experience comfortable.
“This is not forever money. You have to understand that even though you’re talking about millions and millions of money, this ain’t it bro.
“You at 19 years old, but that money ain’t gonna last past 24.”
While Iamaleava is already taking a pay cut at UCLA, that money might be at risk of not even cashing.
College football's 2024 shake-up
Oklahoma and Texas switching from the Big 12 to the SEC is one of the biggest changes to college football in recent times.
And that has set off a chain reaction which has left the Pac-12 conference decimated.
The Pac-12 has lost 10 of its 12 members and is down to just Oregon State and Washington State.
Four of those teams are headed for the Big 12 – Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado and Utah.
Another four are going to the Big 10 – Oregon, UCLA, USC and Washington.
And the other two teams, California and Stanford, will join the ACC conference.
No teams have left the SEC, Big Ten or ACC.
According to ESPN’s Chris Low, Iamaleava’s transfer to UCLA is not yet official.
“We’ll see if it gets worked out,” Low’s UCLA source said.
“He’s extremely talented with starting experience against elite competition. That’s sort of where we are right now.”
ESPN has yet to officially report Iamaleava’s transfer because of this information.
Until Iamaleava’s transfer is officially announced by UCLA, nothing is off the table yet for how this saga could unfold.
