AUSTIN (KXAN) — During a press conference on Thursday, Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis recapped a hectic 24 hours involving a home where explosive material was found.
"On Tuesday evening a call was received from a concerned citizen about potential bomb material inside a residence," Davis said.
This call triggered a multi-agency investigation involving local and federal agencies and led to the arrest of a man previously convicted after an explosion at a Williamson County home.
"The suspect is 66-year-old Steven Aldrich," Davis said.
Suspect in south Austin explosives incident was on parole for related charges: APDDavis said he was placed under arrest for felony possession of components and explosives.
"Our SWAT team and our EOD is familiar with him and his bomb making shenanigans from the past," Davis said.
Was he being monitored?
KXAN reached out to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) to find out more about Aldrich.
TDCJ tells us he was received as an inmate on Sept. 6, 2019, and he was released to parole on Aug. 2, 2022. He had no parole violations and was on normal reporting conditions according to the TDCJ.
TDCJ tells KXAN a regular case load with a client on "low supervision" receives quarterly office visits and annual home visits. These are held virtually since it is low supervision.
Aldrich's last home visit was on July 3, 2024, and his sentence was set to discharge on April 25, according to TDCJ.
