The Trump administration placed a majority of AmeriCorps staffers on administrative leave with pay on Wednesday in their latest effort to downsize the government.
The independent agency is under federal control and provides stipends for volunteers who respond to local, state and national challenges through service projects.
Interim agency head Jennifer Bastress Tahmasebi said Wednesday that employees would be placed on an “excused absence” effective immediately in an internal email.
“During the period that you are on administrative leave you are not to enter AmeriCorps premises, access AmeriCorps systems, or attempt to use your position or authority with AmeriCorps in any way without my prior permission or prior permission of a supervisor in your chain of command,” Tahmasebi wrote in the memo.
Only a small number of workers remain in place to help wind down operations, according to Bloomberg. A similar measure was used to shutter the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).
Tahmasebi’s message came just a day after volunteers in the agency’s disaster relief program, known as the National Civilian Conservation Corps, were sent home early from year-long service projects.
The White House and AmeriCorps did not immediately respond to The Hill’s request for comment on the matter.
Officials did note that Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) workers were seen on site at the agency last week.
DOGE has sought out waste, fraud and abuse in the federal government in an effort to reduce overspending at the direction of tech giant Elon Musk who also supported the closure of USAID.
