Greg McElroy is bullish on Miami in 2025, but he’d like to see the Hurricanes target one specific area in the transfer portal this spring to really take advantage of the roster.
“They are well-equipped to compete at the top of the sport next season,” McElroy said Thursday on his show, Always College Football. “They have one of the best offensive lines, a remarkably experienced quarterback in Carson Beck, but I do think it’d be a little helpful if they could add a little bit more at wide receiver.”
The Hurricanes had 3 pass-catchers last season who all cleared 50 receptions. All 3 of them are gone. The hole left by Xavier Restrepo, Jacolby Georgia, and Isaiah Horton is a big one, but Miami expects to fill it with young pieces.
(Miami also said goodbye to its No. 3 receiver, its top tight end, and its lead running back. Those 3, in combination with the top 3 receivers, were responsible for 81% of the overall Miami receptions last fall.)
“Now, what’s left are some outrageously talented young players and a transfer from LSU in CJ Daniels. This is a talented group, they’re just young,” McElroy said.
Miami has 2024 signees Jojo Trader and Ny Carr, who made noise during the spring. Rising junior Ray Ray Joseph is looking to break out. The 2025 signing class brought 4-star receivers Josh Moore and Malachi Toney to town. And Daniels was rated as a 4-star transfer.
The college football analyst wants to see Miami add a veteran presence to the wideout room to help in the young players’ development.
“One would be great, two would be amazing to kind of show these talented young guys how to work, how to be a pro. That would really advance their development,” McElroy said. “Those 3 talented young guys, they’re all gonna be great. I have full faith in that. But adding a veteran to help bring those guys along and teach them how to be consistent, how to practice, how to approach the game, that would be very helpful for this passing attack, led by Carson Beck, which could be one of the best in college football next year.”
