This just in — There is reason for hope.
It’s the time of year when optimism is the order of the day … hope springs eternal, right? This year, however, we are watching tyranny unfold originating from the Oval Office … previously associated with safety, reverence and the deeply American faith in the rule of law.
The current president does not plan to uphold his oath. Blatantly, he confirmed this at his swearing in, when he had a bible placed before him and didn’t place his hand on it to falsely take the oath of office.
In his mind, this was the equivalent of crossing his fingers behind his back.
The attack on our democracy that is unfolding daily is very real, with innocent people being abducted and renditioned to foreign countries and the current administration flagrantly defying the Supreme Court’s 9-0 ruling ordering them to correct the error.
The comparisons to 1930’s Germany are completely appropriate, but Americans have something that the German citizenry did not have and it’s vital that we use it wherever possible.
Our most effective weapon against our Russian toady of a president is simply this: RIDICULE.
The German people could not send social media messages … words and pictures … making fun of their evil chancellor and have them viewed instantly all over the world. One wonders what might have been if young Anne Frank had been a blogger or a TikTok influencer instead of merely a diarist.
Around the country for the last three months, Americans have protested and demonstrated in stunning numbers. We have attended rallies in the tens of thousands. We have packed town halls to render Republican elected officials speechless in trying to defend indefensible and pointless tariffs that are acting as a wrecking ball in damaging a healthy, thriving economy. That is nobody’s definition of conservatism. The only person pleased with the first three months of this administration is Vladimir Putin.
The hand made signage berating the president and his spectacularly incompetent administration is one of the most epically American things you’ll ever see.
The thin-skinned man baby who lives part time on Pennsylvania Avenue is both a bully and a coward-a typical combination. Most importantly, he cannot do the terrible things his administration is doing without many many people following his obscene orders.
None of those people are under the impression that they are immune from prosecution. They’re just under the false impression that their bully president will pardon them for any law they might have to trample to get the job done.
What happens though when a federal judge orders the arrest of the Attorney General for criminal contempt?” That’s when the 47th president says “Who? I never met her.”
This is when we really lean in and make fun of the guy who thinks a dementia screening test measures intelligence. This is when the Daily Show does a mash up segment on the memory capacity of the president we can’t wait to forget. The importance of Saturday Night Live and Netflix comedy specials in defending our rights has never been more clear.
Because the citizens and the courts are standing up to and pointing at a naked emperor, the dominoes will begin to fall generating pressure to act on the Congress – a CO-EQUAL branch of government.
I don’t have delusions that he’ll quit or be removed. I can’t bring myself to have that much hope for the legitimacy of the Republican Party. I do have hope that he will be marginalized and (to some extent) contained as we wait for the clock to run out, hoping to greet a 48th president.
