DRIVERS have been urged to make alternative plans ahead of a holiday that will shut down hundreds of DMVs for 24 hours.
Despite already long lines and a looming driver‘s license deadline, DMVs across several states will be closed for a day.

She posted several photos of the DMV on Facebook to alert other drivers about the closure.
“I now bring you to the DMV of the 1980s in North Carolina,” she captioned the post.
“…they had 3 clerks working but one went on break…4 chairs are available for those accompanying the ones standing in line…these are privately contracted down here so you have to wait 2 to 3 weeks to get your title on the mail instead of instantly like Virginia,” she continued.
In one of the photos, the DMV had put up a sign that said the office would be closed in observance of Good Friday and would reopen on Monday, April 21.
Since Good Friday is not a federal holiday, city, state, and federal government buildings generally remain open — this includes courthouses and the DMV.
However, many states allow employees to observe it as an optional holiday.
On Wednesday, the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission announced that DMVs across the state would be closed due to the holiday.
“All New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (NJMVC) facilities, including agencies, road test sites, and inspection stations, will be closed Friday, April 18, 2025, in observance of the state holiday,” the commission announced on their website.
Delaware drivers will also have to make other arrangements for the holiday, as DMVs across the state will be closed.
“In observance of Good Friday, all DMV locations will be closed on Friday, April 18, 2025,” Delaware’s Division of Motor Vehicles announced.
The agency said normal hours will resume Monday, April 21, 2025.
For any urgent matters, drivers have been directed to Delaware’s website, which will be available 24/7 to complete eligible services.
Drivers should check with their local DMV office to confirm its hours.
Applying for a REAL ID
The process varies by state, but residents will need a few documents to apply for a REAL ID before the deadline.
No matter the state, the application process can be started online by scanning and uploading the necessary documents, basic information, and Social Security numbers. Once submitted and reviewed, an in-person visit to the DMV or your state’s department agency is necessary for an attendant to verify the documents.
From there, a thumbprint will be recorded in the system, and a photo will be issued for the ID before it’s mailed.
The documents needed are those that show:
Full legal name (previous driver’s license, passport, etc) Date of birth (like a birth certificate, or an official copy of one) Social Security number (Social Security card) Two proofs of residence (like a utility bill or voter registration card) Lawful statusSource: Department of Homeland Security
This comes as drivers nationwide have been complaining about long lines at the DMV and taking extraordinary measures to meet new federal requirements.
Starting May 7, Americans boarding domestic flights will be required to present an ID that meets REAL ID standards.
Once that deadline passes, a federal agency will not accept any state-issued driver’s license or ID card that does not adhere to REAL ID standards.
Drivers are flooding into DMV offices to secure their new identification cards before May 7 — some say they have waited over three hours in line to get their IDs.
“We’ve heard from colleagues in other states that people are sleeping in their cars, sleeping in tents outside of DMVs,” said the Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias.
“We wanted to get in front of that problem.”
Other drivers were desperate enough to have tried paying for appointments.
Those looking to get their new IDs can still do so past May 7, but that is when the rules start being enforced.
