It turns out that Harry, of course, didn’t steal the murder books, but made a copy of them . Even though he retired from the LAPD, this was a case that haunted him. Keeping in line with his “everybody counts or nobody counts” motto, he had hoped to continue working to solve them.
When Ballard shows up and accuses him of theft, he realizes that since she’s part of LAPD RHD (Robbery Homicide Division), something must have triggered her interest, like a new murder. So, he uses the fact that he has something she needs to leverage himself into the investigation even though he receives a lot of resistance.

The Flower Girl murders have been a cold case for about a dozen years when the episode begins, so it’s a hard case to solve. But Harry is adamant that he wants to work it out before another victim of the serial killer is found. Renée is told by her bosses to keep him at a distance. But Harry being Harry, he ignores her and calls on Mo (Stephen A Chang) for his technical expertise to help him, and they run afoul of Renée – at first.
“Maggie’s exceptional in the role, and she really gets it,” Welliver continues. “There’s a tone in the Bosch canon that needs to be adhered to to a certain degree, and she got Renée immediately. I think our experiences were not dissimilar. She read that character and went, “I know who she is. I know how I want to play her.’”

“We had a marvelous time working together and I’m very excited for her show to come out, very excited for the audience,” Welliver says. “The thing is, for the fans of the books, they’ve been wanting Ballard to come into Harry’s orbit. People on social media have been saying for years, ‘Is Renée Ballard ever going to show up?’ That’s now been fully realized, so I’m extremely excited about that.”
What Welliver is going to be a part of is The Equalizer spinoff, which will air on CBS on April 20 as the backdoor pilot episode, “Sins of the Father.” The tune-in information reads: McCall (Queen Latifah) is contacted by Samantha Reed (Juani Feliz), whose father, ex-CIA agent Elijah Reed (Welliver), is missing. While Samantha joins forces with the Equalizer team to track down the agency legend, she learns more about her family’s past in the Dominican Republic.
