IPL 2025 saw its first Super Over in a nail-biting encounter between Delhi Capitals (DC) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. After both teams ended their innings with scores level at 188, the match went into the decider, which DC won in a thrilling finish.

Nitish Rana on not coming for super over

Despite playing a crucial role in RR’s chase with a 51 off 28 balls, Nitish Rana was not chosen to bat in the Super Over. Instead, RR opted for Riyan Parag, Shimron Hetmyer, and Yashasvi Jaiswal, who managed only 11 runs before losing two wickets. DC then chased the target of 12 runs in just four balls.

At the post-match press conference, Rana clarified the decision-making process: “The management takes the call, not one person. The captain is there along with two other senior players and coaches. If Shimron Hetmyer had hit two sixes, then you wouldn’t be asking this question.” He said that cricket is a “result-oriented sport” and decisions are made based on discussions among the management and support staff.

“One person never takes such calls. Management and support staff is there to discuss such things. If the decision was in our favour, then your question would have been different. Cricket is a result-oriented sport. If Sandeep Sharma had bowled well in the Super Over, which he has done in the past. In this situation, he was most likely the bowler for us. We were one big shot less. We were targeting 15 runs in the Super Over.” he added.

Delhi Capitals won the match

The match saw Delhi Capitals riding late cameos from captain Axar Patel, Tristan Stubbs, and Ashutosh Sharma to post 188/5 on a slow pitch. Yashasvi Jaiswal and Nitish Rana attempted to take RR to victory, but the game went into a Super Over thanks to Mitchell Starc’s effective defence of nine runs in the final over.

In the Super Over, Starc held RR to 11 runs. Despite a no-ball boundary, both Shimron Hetmyer and Riyan Parag were run out in quick succession, leaving KL Rahul and Tristan Stubbs to complete the chase for DC. They managed the task efficiently, sealing DC’s victory with Stubbs hitting a six. After this win, Delhi is sitting on the top of the table currently with 10 points.
