Notre Dame thrower Aja Johnson is building on last season’s success, winning the girls discus event and placing second in shot put at the Arcadia Invitational high school track and field meet Saturday.
Johnson, a senior, beat 15 other throwers to secure the discus title with a toss of 159 feet and 1 inch, which is the second-best distance in the state this season. Her 48-1 mark in shot put earned her runner-up honors as well as the No. 2 spot in the state.
The 5-foot-4 Johnson was one of the best in the nation as a junior and was a discus champion at the CIF Southern Section Finals, CIF-SS Masters Meet and the CIF State championships. She won the CIF-SS finals and Masters Meet before coming in second in the state meet in shot put.
Golden Valley also saw success in girls discus at the Arcadia Invitational with Kiera Donovan throwing 146-1 for seventh place.
Westlake’s Lawson Grace was the best-performing boys thrower from the Daily News area at the Arcadia Invitational. He placed eighth in discus with a 182-3 throw.

Oaks Christian’s 800-meter sprint medley relay team set a new school record and the second-fastest time in the nation when it clocked 1:42.34 at the Arcadia Invitational.
The 800 SMR is comprised of two 100-meter legs, a 200-meter leg and a 400-meter leg and the Lions’ group of Kyra Terry, Chiara Baker, Devyn Sproles and Rayah Rodriguez surpassed the school record of 1:44.41 set in 2023.
Rodriguez ran a 54.27 to finish fourth in the 400 and the same relay team ran 46.45 to place fifth in the 4×100 relay — a race that featured multiple top-10 finishes by Daily News area teams.
Calabasas hit 45.61 for third place in the event behind Malia Rainey, Olivia Kirk, Dejah Evans and Marley Scoggins. Canyon continued its successful season and placed sixth at 46.50 with Emoni Wright, Alaya Graves-Hogains, Lyric Scott and Lanai Gant running.
Canyon’s runners also took fifth in the 4×400 relay (3:48.73) and Graves-Hogains was eighth in the 400 (55.29).
The Coyotes fared well in individual sprint events. Scoggins was fifth in the 200 (24.18) and Kirk wasn’t far behind in eighth place (24.31).
Boys high jumpers take over
Three boys jumpers from the area finished in the Top 10 in the boys high jump event at the Arcadia Invitational.
Moorpark’s Davis Benson cleared 6-9 for fourth place, Harvard-Westlake’s Pierce Neirick reached 6-5 for sixth place and Notre Dame’s Charles Halverson made 6-5 for eighth place.
Neirick cleared 6-2 on his first attempt, giving him an edge in the final standings.
In other field events, Golden Valley’s Addae Ma’at was runner-up in the long jump (23-6) and fourth in the triple jump (47-8 1/2). Grizzlies girls jumper Nyah Fields was third in the long jump with a leap of 19-2.
Nikko Petronicolis of Notre Dame came in eighth in the boys long jump with a distance of 22-5 1/2.

Notre Dame’s girls 4×100 shuttle hurdle relay came in second (1:06.85). The Knights’ boys 4×110 shuttle hurdle relay was third (59.98).
Demare Dezeurn of Alemany was third in the 100 (10.38) and sixth in the 200 (21.47).
Granada Hills Charter’s Justin Hart came in fifth in the 200 (21.45). Harvard-Westlake’s Sofia Rakfeldt was 10th in the girls pole vault (11-11).
Canyon’s boys 4×400 relay team of Jeremiah Easley, Myles McCrory, Jordehn Gammage and Jermaree Whitener clocked 3:16.58 to finish fifth in the event.
The Oaks Christian 4,000 distance relay team finished in 10:19.09 for seventh place. Arizechukwu Nwosu, Brooks Bennett, Vin Krueger and Cooper McNee each ran in the race.
