After leading the India cricket team to their 2nd ICC title in 9 months, everyone assumed we’ll see Rohit Sharma at his best in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season. But after five outings for the Mumbai Indians (MI), the former captain has failed not just to score big but also quickly.
Cricket 5 mins “We’ll try our best,” Rohit Sharma hints at continuing as Test captain for IND vs ENG seriesHe’s yet to play more than 12 balls in an innings. A big issue is that Rohit has been getting starts but hasn’t been able to convert them. He’s got into double digits thrice yet hasn’t passed the 20-run mark yet. His mode of dismissals haven’t been that great either. It’s befuddling how someone who was the ‘Player of the Match’ in the Champions Trophy Final can’t find success now.

Rohit Sharma’s coach not worried about IPL form
While Rohit enthusiasts might be worried, his childhood coach, Dinesh Lad, isn’t. In his 18-year career, he’s seen many ups and downs. And as per Lad, had his failures been coming in longer formats, ODI or Test cricket, he’d be slightly worried. But since it’s T20 cricket where Rohit seems to be failing to score, he’s unbothered.
“In T20 cricket, you can’t predict who will do what. In T20s, you just swing the bat. If you (me) swing the bat, you can also score 100 runs. I am not worried about that. If he fails to score in ODIs or Tests, I may be worried, but not about IPL,” Lad told MyKhel.

Considering Rohit is his protégé, Lad will be favouring him. But from Mumbai’s perspective, retaining someone for Rs 16.30 crore and then not performing isn’t ideal. Rohit has won MI five titles, but the franchise is pragmatic. He’s been moved on as the captain, with Hardik Pandya replacing him.
One has to wonder, for how long will MI persist with Rohit? Since the IPL 2021 season, they haven’t qualified for playoffs. Moreover, they finished 10th in 2022 and 2024. And his performance hasn’t been great either. If the opener doesn’t find form soon, they might be forced to take a big decision.
