Drinking Coffee Has One Very Surprising Health Benefit ...Saudi Arabia

“Studies have found that drinking coffee in moderation can lower the risk of some cancers, as well as neurological, metabolic and liver conditions, which in turn can lead to a longer lifespan,” says longevity expert, Dr. Nathan Price, PhD, who is the co-director at the Buck Institute for Research on Aging. Dr. Price says that one major reason why coffee is so beneficial is because it’s high in antioxidants. “Antioxidants fight against oxidative stress, which causes damaged cells and the development of chronic diseases,” he explains.

Hadley says that another reason why coffee can add years to your life is because of its impact on metabolism. She shares that caffeine and polyphenols, both of which are present in coffee, can enhance metabolism and break down fat.Related: The One Thing That's More Important for Longevity Than Your GenesAdditionally, coffee is good for your brain. “Coffee contains compounds that have neuroprotective effects, which can reduce cognitive decline as we age and may even improve memory and thinking,” Hadley says. "Multiple studies have shown that drinking coffee regularly may reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s, dementia and Parkinson’s."

How To Keep Your Coffee Habit Healthy

Both experts emphasize that what you put in your coffee matters. Adding sugar or sugar-containing syrups to your coffee can decrease the health benefits you get from it because sugar is linked to a decreased lifespan, as it can increase the likelihood of heart disease, diabetes and obesity.Instead of sugar, Hadley recommends sweetening coffee with cinnamon, an herb that’s beneficial for heart health and linked to lowering inflammation. Maca is another herb she says can be beneficial to add to coffee because it’s high in antioxidants.According to Dr. Price, another way to make your coffee even healthier than it is on its own is to add creatine powder to it. “Creatine is a great option to add to coffee to support longevity because it offers a range of cognitive and physical benefits that contribute to overall health and wellness,” he says. He explains that creatine supplementation supports cognitive function by providing brain cells with energy, especially in times of stress or sleep deprivation.

While drinking coffee can contribute to longevity, Dr. Price emphasizes that overall diet and lifestyle habits matter, saying, “The American College of Cardiology found that quality sleep, for example, plays a critical role in increasing life expectancy, along with maintaining a healthy weight, getting plenty of exercise and getting the proper nutrients through food and dietary supplements, as needed."
