Barcelona made it through to the Champions League semi-finals, but despite winning the first leg of this tie with Borussia Dortmund comfortably, their progress was ultimately far from routine.
The damage had been done a week ago, when the Spaniards ran out 4-0 winners in the home leg, and in the end, there was no route back into it for Dortmund in this return game. That said, the German side certainly made the tie interesting.
They were far the better team on the night, registering more shots on target (11) than they had ever had in a Champions League knockout-stage match on record (since 2003-04), and creating more than enough chances to deserve their win. They racked up 3.85 xG to Barcelona’s 0.49 – the difference of 3.36 was the biggest in any knockout match this season so far, 1.01 xG ahead of the second-biggest gap (+2.35 xG for Bayern Munich vs Bayer Leverkusen).
In the end, though, producing one of the greatest comebacks in Champions League history was beyond them. Only once in the competition has a team successfully overturned a four-goal first-leg deficit – Barcelona against PSG in 2016-17.
Wojciech Szczesny handed them an opportunity to take the lead on the night when he was adjudged to have taken out Pascal Groß in the box. Only Nicolás Otamendi (six) and Pepe (five) have now conceded more penalties in Champions League history than Szczesny (four).
Serhou Guirassy made no mistake from the spot, in the process becoming just the second African player to score 11+ goals in a single Champions League season, after Sébastien Haller in 2021-22 (also 11).
Dortmund continued to dominate the first half. They had seven shots on target before the break – the joint-most Barcelona have faced in the first half of a Champions League game since Opta began collecting this data.
But they picked up where they left off after the break, and they added to their lead through Guirassy heading in his second of the night from a corner.
Their rising hopes were probably put to bed when Ramy Bensebaini scored an own goal five minutes later, but Dortmund didn’t give up. Guirassy pounced on a Ronald Araujo error to complete his hat-trick and reduce the deficit to two goals once again, but there was to be no fairytale ending for the hosts.
It is Barça who go through to the last four, and they remain the favourites to win the competition overall, now given a 27.4% chance of glory according to the Opta supercomputer.
But Dortmund showed here that the Spanish giants, who they had never beaten before and who hadn’t lost even once this year coming into this game, are actually very beatable indeed.
