This competition represents the primary qualifying opportunity for athletes to add their names to the Italian lineup for this summer’s World Championships, so the stakes are high.
18-year-old World Junior Record holder Sara Curtis fired off a warning shot in the women’s 50m backstroke heats, clocking a time of 28.02 to land lane 4 with relative ease.
The next-closest swimmer was Francesca Pasquino who touched over half a second back in 28.54.
National record holder Silvia Scalia was in the race as well, notching 28.87 as the 6th-seeded swimmer.
For Curtis, her time was already within striking distance of her lifetime best of 27.94, a time she produced en route to becoming last year’s European Junior champion.
Costanza Cocconcelli put her hat in the ring for a potential 100m fly title, nabbing the sole sub-59-second performance of this morning’s field.
The 23-year-old put up a time of 58.94 to hold a healthy advantage over Viola Scotto Di Carlo who will flank her during tonight’s final, courtesy of her 59.39 this morning.
Paola Borrelli will be on the other side after hitting 59.41 while Caterina Santambrogio, just 15 years of age, is in the mix with an AM swim of 59.45.
On the men’s side, Lorenzo Gargani turned in a time of 23.76 to narrowly lead the men’s 50m fly field.
24-year-old Gargani is chased by Gianmarco Sansone and Federico Burdisso, with the former posting 23.77 to the latter’s 23.79.
The top 6 finishers were all under the 24-second threshold but will need to be much quicker in order to meet the Italian Swimming Federation-mandated qualification time of 22.89 needed for Singapore.
Already the 50m backstroke champion, 19-year-old Christian Bacico followed up with a swift morning swim of 53.71 in the 100m sprint today.
That already sliced .18 off his previous personal best of 53.90, which he logged in the early rounds of the event at the 2023 World Junior Championships. There in Netanya, Bacico ultimately bagged the bronze with a slightly slower mark of 54.08.
As a reminder, Olympic champion Thomas Ceccon is not competing at these championships. Instead, he’s been granted permission to achieve qualification at the Australian Open National Championships taking place in just over a week.
Olympic champion from Paris Nicolo Martinenghi cruised to the pole position in the men’s 100m breast, scoring the only sub-minute swim of the field.
Martinenghi touched in 59.95 to stake his claim on the race that saw him beat British star Adam Peaty and American ace Nic Fink at the 2024 Olympic Games. The 25-year-old is already within range of the 59.29 QT needed for the World Championships.
Federico Poggio turned in a time of 1:00.12 as the 2nd seed and Simone Cerasuolo was a hair behind in 1:00.18.
Additional Notes
After qualifying for Singapore in the women’s 100m breaststroke by the skin of her teeth, 29-year-old Lisa Angiolini will try to double up with a bid in the 200m breast. The veteran stopped the clock at 2:27.34 as the top-seeded swimmer, with national record holder Francesca Fangio joining her in sub-2:28 territory in 2:27.89. Of note, Olympian Benedetta Pilato was entered in this event but was a no-show. That as after the 20-year-old made the 1breast final but withdrew herself in last night’s session. The women’s 200m free was void of any times under the 2:00 barrier. Giulia D’Innocenzo led the way in 2:00.32 followed by Anna Chiara Mascolo‘s time of 2:00.42. Last night’s 800m free winner and World Championships qualifier Simona Quadarella is in the mix with a 3rd-seeded 2:00.46. Behind her, Alessandra Mao, born in 2011, crushed her previous personal best by over 2 seconds with a mark of 2:00.53, a new Italian Record for the youth category.Read the full story on SwimSwam: 2025 Italian Championships Day 2 Prelims Recap: Martinenghi Is On The Prowl
