Banged up Padres, without Merrill, Tatis or Cronenworth, still find way to win, 2-1 ...Middle East

News by : (Times of San Diego) -

Padres center fielder Jackson Merrill has landed on the injured list, days after finalizing a $135 million, nine-year deal with the club.

He’s out for at least 10 days with a right hamstring strain, putting a halt to his sizzling start, in which he hit safely in his first eight games.

Merrill, who turns 22 next week. is batting .378 (14 for 37) with three homers and 10 RBIs.

The Padres recalled outfielder Oscar Gonzalez from Triple-A El Paso to take Merrill’s place.

Merrill isn’t the only one who’s hurting. Though the Padres won two out of three against the Athletics, including Wednesday’s 2-1 victory, they took it on the chin Tuesday, losing 10-4.

Jake Cronenworth came out of the loss in the third inning, after suffering cramps from an earlier rib injury, manager Mike Shildt told reporters, and Fernando Tatis Jr. left in the fifth with left shoulder discomfort stemming from a slide.

So the Padres played without three of their mainstays Wednesday, but Randy Vásquez and Xander Bogaerts stepped up as the club became the first in the majors to log 10 wins this season.

Vásquez gave up one hit over five innings and Bogaerts had three hits and scored both Friar runs.

Bogaerts scored in the third on Gavin Sheets’ sacrifice fly and in the fifth on Oscar Gonzalez’s single. Gonzalez, Manny Machado and Jason Heyward added two hits apiece.

The Padres have an off day Thursday after a 3-3 road trip. They begin a six-game home stand Friday against the Rockies with Nick Pivetta (1-1, 2.70) takeing the mound against Colorado’s German Marquez (0-1, 2.45).
