Texas Tech forward JT Toppin has announced his return to college basketball for the 2025-26 season.
Toppin was one of the sport’s very best players this year as he earned second-team All-America status from multiple selectors. Instead of turning pro, Toppin will cash in on his NIL value for at least one more season.
According to college basketball insider Matt Norlander, Toppin is set to earn approximately $4 million in NIL next year:
JT Toppin is expected to be paid ~$4 million in NIL earnings at Texas Tech next season, a source tells CBS Sports. The latest/biggest piece of evidence that reflects how invested TTU is in basketball—and a positive development for the sport to retain a player as great as Toppin.

The 2025-26 season will be Toppin’s junior year. This past season, he nearly led the Red Raiders to the Final Four but they came up just short in the Elite Eight against Florida. Toppin had a 20-point double-double in each of Texas Tech’s last 3 NCAA Tournament games this year, including in a losing effort to the Gators.
Toppin averaged 18.2 points and 9.4 rebounds per game this season. A former New Mexico transfer, he’ll have another chance to get Texas Tech back to the Final Four in 2026. As Norlander noted, Toppin will likely be a preseason All-American and a popular pick for preseason National Player of the Year ahead of next season.
