With so many checkout processes being streamlined for efficiency, one small hiccup can throw everything off balance.
Retail transactions are smoother when both the employee and the customer feel respected.
“Packing groceries, I’ve been called stupid,” one Costco employee wrote on Reddit.
2. KEEP THE AISLE CLEAR
Being mindful of your surroundings and not blocking traffic helps everyone move through the store more easily.
“People have been trampled because they’re busy catching up with a friend, and impatient people are pushing past them, running their feet over with their carts.”
Keeping track of your spending helps to prevent unnecessary delays at the checkout line.
“‘You brought me those items, I scanned them, it’s $127.. have a wonderful day.. next member.'”
4. READ THE SIGNS
One employee on Reddit shared that customers must always enter and exit through the proper designated area.
“You go through the entrance, and THEN, the employee at the door has to let you go to the membership desk to return and get a refund. This is to help with the door count and make sure nobody is able to leave the store without being checked.”
“If you have a cart full of product, more than 10 items, it’s best to go to a cashier lane,” the user continued.
6. DON’T OVERDO IT AT SCO
One major delay for both employees and customers is when members bring too many items to the self-checkout (SCO).
Costco employees must scan membership cards at the register, so having your card in your hand will make the process quicker.
“We can’t scan anything until we’ve scanned your card so it’s best to have it ready before you start unloading.”
8. THE HOT DOG IS A COMBO
However, some members don’t realize this until they’ve already paid, prompting unwanted setbacks for returns.
Before standing in line at the SCO, make sure you have the right payment method handy.
Similarly, food courts only accept cash at the register. For credit card purchases, members must use the kiosk.
10. THERE ARE TWO EXIT LINES
During a shopping rush, crowds at the exit can get hectic.
“The only thing I’d add is ‘There are TWO lines when you leave to show your receipt,” one Redditor wrote.
“TWO LINES. Just like last time and just like now and just like next time. But you will forget.”
