Joe Rogan has credited Bernard Hopkins for being a rare sporting super athlete.

Hopkins saw it all in the world of boxing, having competed in 65 fights as a professional across 28 years before retiring at the age of 51.

Hopkins is viewed as one of the most successful boxers of the past three decadesgetty

The American legend became the oldest world champion in the sport after snatching the WBC light heavyweight title from Jean Pascal in 2011 at 46.

Incredibly, he extended his own record two years later by defeating Tavoris Cloud to claiming the IBF’s 175-pound strap.

However, the best record of them all came during a period after when he unified the WBA belt against Beibut Shumenov in April 2014 at the age of 49, before losing both of his titles to Russia’s Sergey Kovalev seven months later.

Hopkins was an incredible 49 years and 297 days old on the last official day of his title reign until he was dropped by Canelo Alvarez’s ex-rival.

UFC commentator Rogan, who has been around the fight game all his life, felt obliged to applaud the incredible feat in an episode of his popular podcast this week.

”There’s no like super athletes that are in their 50s, they don’t exist…” Rogan explained.

“There’s one guy here I can tell you that did it into his 50s, Bernard Hopkins.

“He was a boxer, world champion boxer, multiple division world champion boxer, was beating world champions at 50.”

Hopkins’ last victory in the ring was against Shumenov, before he called time on his boxing career the fight after his Kovalev loss when was brutally stopped by Joe Smith Jr in 2016.

He has since been part of the biggest spectacles in the sport’s history as a promoter, having become a minority partner in the Oscar De La Hoya-owned Golden Boy Promotions in the last years of his career.

”So Hopkins broke his own record by winning the IBF light heavyweight title from Tavoris Cloud in 2013 and again in 2014, won the WBA super title from Beibut Shumenov at ages 48 and 49,” Rogan added in disbelief.

“That’s f****** crazy. So he wins two titles – a title at age 48 and a title at age 49 – incredible.

“The way that he would box was super intelligent, he was very defensively minded.

“You didn’t get clean shots off on Bernard Hopkins. He was very clever and he understood boxing like at a very, very deep level.

“His footwork was always on point. [He] never drank, never smoked, always took care of his body, ate only organic food, worked out everyday, never got out of shape – just all discipline, so he was able to maintain his body. “

Rogan, unfortunately for fans, went on to say that he won’t find himself in the ring anytime soon, to avoid things like head trauma.

Rogan said Hopkins was ‘very clever’ with his approach to boxing

The topic stemmed from a conversation around Mike Tyson and the 58-year-old’s boxing match with Jake Paul, who is 30 years his junior.

Rogan acknowledged that he was aware of people being offered fake fights, meaning an outcome would be decided before the bout took place.

He then mentioned celebrity fights and stated he sensed a little bit of scepticism surrounding Tyson’s meeting Paul when asked if the boxing legend really gave the fight his all.

Nonetheless, the event set a record with a gate of over £14million, while over 100 million viewers tuned in on Netflix.
