Heritage Barbecue, fresh off a James Beard nomination, and Alicia Cox, founder of Prjkt Restaurant Group (Sahara SandBar and SeaLegs at the Beach), have teamed up for a beach-bound barbecue concept set to open this spring and last throughout the summer.
Christened SeaSalt Smokehouse, the upcoming pop-up will be one part Heritage Barbecue and one part honky-tonk music venue held inside Cox’s newly remodeled SeaSalt Honky Tonk at the Beach.

Subscribe here.“Alicia had the idea of bringing barbecue, so we’re taking over the kitchen and bringing Heritage down to the beach,” said Brenda Castillo, co-owner/co-founder of Heritage Barbecue.

The menu at SeaSalt Smokehouse won’t be a carbon copy of the one fans know at the San Juan Capistrano location. Instead, it will be a pared-down, yet no less tasty, affair replete with live-fire cooking. “We will have a menu people will recognize from Heritage, like nachos, tacos, burritos and more,” Castillo said.

Cox’s Bolsa Chica State Beach country-western music venue on the sand — “the first of its kind,” according to the SeaSalt Honky Tonk Instagram page — will feature live music, line-dancing lessons, and a full bar.
Look for it to open Saturday, May 3 and last until summer’s final sunset — whenever that will be. “California summer can go into October so we’re playing it by ear,” said Castillo. “If summer is here, we will be here.”
