Songs from Elton John, Celine Dion and Mary J. Blige; the cast recording of "Hamilton;" and the Microsoft Windows reboot chime are being recognized as the "sounds of America" — earning them a new place in the Library of Congress's National Recording Registry.
Twenty-five "audio treasures" will be added to the National Recording Registry, Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden announced on Wednesday.
Some of the recordings include: John's 1973 album "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road," Blige's "My Life," the soundtrack to the Minecraft video game, Dion's 1997 smash hit, "My Heart Will Go On," Amy Winehouse's 2006 album "Back to Black," Miles Davis's 1970 "Bitches Brew," Tracy Chapman's eponymous 1988 album, Chicago’s 1969 LP “Chicago Transit Authority,” the radio broadcast of game seven of the 1970 World Series and "Fly Like an Eagle" from the Steve Miller Band.
The recording from 2011's "Minecraft: Volume Alpha" is the second video game soundtrack to ever be added to the registry. The 1985 theme song to the Super Mario Bros. made the cut in 2023.
"The National Recording Registry is our evolving nation’s playlist,” Hayden said in a statement.
“The Library of Congress is proud and honored to select these audio treasures worthy of preservation, including iconic music across a variety of genres, field recordings, sports history and even the sounds of our daily lives with technology," she added.
More than 2,600 public nominations were suggested this year for the registry, according to the Library of Congress, with "Chicago Transit Authority" garnering the most submissions.
Including the new additions, there are 675 recordings that make up the National Recording Registry. The newest picks span from 1913 to 2015.
