Diamondbacks end 3-game losing streak with dramatic win over Orioles ...Middle East

PHOENIX — Arizona Diamondbacks starter Merrill Kelly delivered a quality start before getting ejected alongside manager Torey Lovullo, and the offense mustered just enough offense for a 4-3 win over the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday.

The D-backs (6-6) snapped a three-game skid in what became a dramatic ballgame at Chase Field.

Kelly allowed two runs in the first inning after loading the bases with a hit-by-pitch. A Cedric Mullins single to right gave Baltimore the early 2-0 lead.

Kelly held Baltimore there with an inning-ending double play, but Arizona’s streak of allowing runs in the first inning extended to six games.

The D-backs got one back in the bottom half with the bases loaded and nobody out. Josh Naylor hit into a double play, and the Diamondbacks were held to one run despite a golden opportunity.

Arizona tied the game in the third on a Corbin Carroll solo shot and took the lead in the fifth. Naylor found some redemption with a go-ahead, two-run double ripped into the right-field corner off Orioles starter Charlie Morton.

Meanwhile, Kelly found a groove.

He retired 12 straight Orioles hitters, a streak ended by a Eugenio Suarez fielding error. He exited the game with two runners on and nobody out in the seventh.

His outing concluded on an odd note.

Kelly seemed to strike out Orioles hitter Tyler O’Neill on a check swing, but first base umpire and crew chief Laz Diaz said O’Neill did not go around. Kelly walked the batter to end his night, and quickly emotions flared.

Kelly was tossed while walking off the field. Manager Torey Lovullo raced out of the dugout and was swiftly ejected. Lovullo passionately argued in Diaz’s face as the crowd chanted “Torey, Torey.”

And then the game got even wackier.

With the bases loaded and one out, Jackson Holliday hit a low liner to left field off reliever Shelby Miller.

Lourdes Gurriel Jr. made a sliding catch and came up firing, chucking the ball to the backstop. A run scored on the sacrifice fly, but O’Neill on second base never tagged up, clearly thinking the ball hit the ground.

The Diamondbacks recorded the inning-ending double play, and the Orioles challenged.

After a lengthy review process, the batter was ruled out, O’Neill was ruled out and the one run upheld. At the seventh-inning stretch, Arizona led 4-3.

A.J. Puk stranded a runner in the eighth inning, and Justin Martinez shut the door to pick up the save in the ninth.
