You might have had to pause making omelets recently because of rising egg prices earlier this year, but is it possible the egg shortage was a blessing in disguise? A study on postmenopausal women found that the classic breakfast item may sneakily add inches to your waistline.
About 50% of women experience weight gain during perimenopause or menopause, especially in the abdomen and upper body area. Staying at the usual weight gets harder every year, with women gaining an average of 1.5 pounds annually.

What You May Want To Avoid Eating Post-Menopause
“There are many benefits eggs have on female health, including preventing cognitive decline according to recent research,” says Dr. James A. Greenberg, Ph.D., a professor of Health and Nutrition Sciences at CUNY Brooklyn College and lead study author. “However, the relationship between egg consumption and body weight in postmenopausal women has barely been explored.”

The women who were more likely to gain weight were also those who followed a “Western” diet high in red meats, sugar-sweetened beverages, fried foods and desserts. Interestingly, the researchers note genetics may influence egg-related weight gain. Weight gain from eggs occurred only in women genetically prone to obesity.
