Florida beat Houston on Monday night, 65-63, to capture the program’s third-ever national championship.
The Gators’ run to the title was breathtaking, stressful, remarkable, and unprecedented. Truth be told, it might be one of the most remarkable championships in modern March Madness history.
Florida trailed Texas Tech by 10 points with 5:30 to play in the Elite Eight and came back to win. It trailed Auburn by 9 early in the second half of the Final Four and won. It trailed Houston by 12 in the second half of Monday night’s title fight and came back to win. According to CBS Sports, Florida is the only team this decade with 3 comebacks of 9 points or more in the Elite Eight and beyond.
The Gators also became the first team in the modern era to win the national championship without a top-100 recruit on their roster, per CBS Sports’ Isaac Trotter.
A freshman didn’t see the floor in the title game for the first time since 1989.
The Gators beat 2 No. 1 seeds in the NCAA Tournament and beat 2 different AP No. 1 teams during the regular season.
They won the toughest conference (the SEC) in KenPom history, judged by net rating. They beat the 2-time defending champs in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. And, oh, by the way, Florida became the first and only Division I school in the country to claim 3 national championships in men’s college basketball and 3 national championships in football.
And Florida did it all 12 months removed from a first-round NCAA Tournament exit.
In Todd Golden’s second season, Florida lost to Colorado as a 7-seed after winning 24 games. The Gators gave up 102 points. Golden set out to improve the defense while maintaining the blistering offense.
Florida finished with the second-ranked offense and the sixth-ranked defense, per KenPom. The Gators won their final 12 games and went 9-1 against KenPom top-10 teams. And they matched a program record for wins in a single season with 36.
It is a great day to be a Gator.
