Things are looking tough for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in IPL 2025. The team faced its third consecutive defeat after losing by 25 runs to Delhi Capitals at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Once again, CSK’s batting lineup couldn’t meet the challenge, allowing the visiting team to secure an easy victory.
Post-match press conference
During the post-match press conference, CSK head coach Stephen Fleming was put on the spot when a reporter asked about discussions on Ravichandran Ashwin’s YouTube channel, where the team’s performance was criticised. The discussion on the channel included a panellist questioning CSK’s decision to pick Noor Ahmad at the mega auction, despite him being the current highest wicket-taker in the tournament.
When asked about whether such discussions could create awkwardness within the team, Fleming seemed unfazed. “Mate, I have no idea. I don’t even know he had a channel, so I don’t follow that stuff. That’s irrelevant. You guys are important,” he said.
Need for improvement
CSK has been unable to successfully chase down targets larger than 175 since IPL 2021. Against Delhi Capitals, the task was to chase 184, but none of the batters, including Vijay Shankar (69*) and MS Dhoni (30*), were able to push the score aggressively enough to meet the required rate of over 14 runs per over.
Coach Stephen Fleming acknowledged that changes are necessary for better performance in chasing big targets. “We are looking to find the formula that will get us over the line. We are certainly well aware of the chasing stat… We need to have one or two players in form, predominantly in the top three or four,” Fleming remarked. He emphasised the importance of top-order batters performing well to set a solid stage for the power hitters to finish the game.
CSK need to win
With CSK now sitting in the eighth spot on the points table, Fleming expressed the frustration of repeated losses by narrow margins. “Six to 15 to 20-run losses are annoying,” he added, highlighting the need for CSK’s lineup to deliver more effectively and consistently.
