SIR KEIR Starmer will tomorrow launch a dash for growth as he scrambles to shore up Britain’s economy in the wake of Donald Trump’s tariffs.

The PM will issue a rallying cry for investors to “back British brilliance” and press fast forward on plans for an industrial strategy and to axe red tape.

But in a sign UK plc is already getting battered, Jaguar Land Rover is halting shipments of British-made cars to the US over the levies.

And Friday was the FTSE 100 index’s worst day of trading since the pandemic.

Tomorrow, Sir Keir will deliver a tub-thumping speech to drum up backing for UK business.

A No 10 source said: “Britain is a nation to be proud of. We stand tall in the face of uncertainty, and this Government’s choice in this volatile world is to back British brilliance.

“That’s why, this week, the PM will go further and faster to back British business and boost Britain’s industrial power so we’re less exposed to these kind of shocks.”

The source added: “We’ve ripped up planning rules to get Britain building. We’re reforming the state to make it work for working people.

“We’ve invested record amounts in our public services. But the world is changing before our eyes. We are in a new era. And that requires even greater action.”

The PM is expected to give the go-ahead to a British Universal Studios theme park in Milton Keynes, Bucks, in an infrastructure boost.

The Treasury will also unveil plans to make British holidays cheaper for punters.

It will slash red tape so hotels and campsites can join forces with pubs, restaurants and sports facilities for their own DIY package holidays.

The PM will also water down rules on the transition to electric vehicles, and push ahead with cuts to quangos.

Sir Keir continued his international diplomatic trade blitz, speaking to French president Emmanuel Macron about the crisis from his Chequers country retreat yesterday.

The pair said “nothing should be off the table”.

No 10 does not want to slap reciprocal tariffs on the US — fearing a tit-for-tat trade war will plunge our ailing economy into a deeper crisis.

Global markets have nose-dived and trillions have been wiped from the value of businesses after the tariffs were announced.

British manufacturers fear China will now flood the UK market with cheap cars and bicycles in a move that could threaten industrial jobs.

European brewers have also warned the levies could lead to 100,000 job losses.

Meanwhile, thousands of protesters gathered across America yesterday to demonstrate against the tariffs.

Hang tough, it won’t be easy, but the end result will be historic. We will make America great again.

But President Trump held firm with his economic plan yesterday. He posted online: “This is an economic revolution, and we will win.

But Americans may not agree if they miss out on new Jaguar Land Rover vehicles as the iconic brand pauses shipments to the US.

JLR sells 400,000 Range Rover Sports, Defenders and other models annually.

Exports to the US account for almost a quarter of those sales, with 38,000 cars shipped there in the third quarter of 2024.

The vehicles are popular with stars such as Ben Affleck, Kim Kardashian and Jennifer Lopez.

JLR said: “We are taking some short-term actions including a shipment pause in April.”
