The San Diego County Sheriff’s Office Saturday was investigating Friday’s fatal shooting of a suspect by officers with the San Diego Police Department following a roadside standoff in a Stockton-area neighborhood.

The suspect was inside a car parked next to a church at 31st and K streets when the gunfire erupted shortly before 11 a.m. Friday, according to police.

A witnesses told a police sergeant that around 10:10 a.m., the witness “saw a Hispanic male adult, sitting inside a blue Ford Fusion, brandishing a black revolver at a person near the intersection of 31 Street and K Street,” according to a Sheriff’s Office statement issued late Friday.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, “officers located the vehicle with the subject sitting inside, along with a female companion. San Diego police officers conducted a high-risk vehicle stop and safely removed the female.”

“The suspect refused to follow the officers’ orders,” sheriff’s officials added.

Police negotiated with the subject for approximately 40 minutes, sheriff’s officials said.

“At about 10:50 a.m., the male pointed what was believed to be a black revolver in the direction of the officers through the open driver side window,” according to the Sheriff’s Office. “Five San Diego police officers and one San Diego police sergeant shot multiple rounds at the subject.”

Video footage captured by CBS8 showed police speaking with the suspect through the driver’s-side window of the vehicle from across the street, then shouting and opening fire, leaving the blue sedan riddled by more than two- dozen bullet holes.

At that point, officers sent in a service dog before approaching the vehicle and pulling out the mortally wounded man. Paramedics took the suspect to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police told reporters.

No officers were injured, according to the SDPD.

Police did not immediately disclose the nature of the firearm threats purportedly made by the suspect, who appeared to be in his early to mid-20s, and it was unclear if he was armed at the time of the law enforcement shooting.

Sheriff’s Homicide Unit detectives “found a B.B. gun that resembled a revolver inside the vehicle,” county authorities said.

Following the sheriff’s investigation, the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office will determine if the officers are criminally liable, while the SDPD will review the officers’ discharge of their firearms, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities are waiting on an identification of the suspect.
