Chennai Super Kings (CSK) will have to make at least one change against the Delhi Capitals (DC). The five-time Indian Premier League (IPL) champions haven’t had the best of starts to the 2025 season. Seventh on the points table with just one win in three matches, CSK might have to face DC without their captain, Ruturaj Gaikwad.
CSK batting coach Michael Hussey has revealed on the eve of the match that Gaikwad has a sore elbow and isn’t certain to face DC. They can’t access it right now whether the opener will play or not and hope that his condition improves.
Devon Conway to replace Ruturaj Gaikwad?
The question is, if Gaikwad doesn’t get fit in time, who’ll replace him? Given their issues with batting, CSK might bring in Devon Conway. Although the veteran opener’s form hasn’t been great in the last couple of years, in the past he’s done well for the franchise.
The middle order, consisting of Vijay Shankar, Shivam Dube and Ravindra Jadeja, doesn’t inspire much confidence. Conway can open with Rahul Tripathi, and Rachin Ravindra can then bat at number three. Someone like Vansh Bedi or Shaik Rasheed can then come in as the impact substitute player. Conway will replace Jamie Overton, who may not be that useful at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.
Will MS Dhoni captain CSK once again?
Now let’s come to the captaincy. Hussey isn’t sure who’ll lead CSK. He suggested that MS Dhoni might be named captain once again, or it could be someone new. Given where they are, Shivam Dube might be the best option. He’s the only Indian regular in the team. The other, Jadeja, was the captain once but stepped down and won’t take the role again.
Whether CSK will make Dhoni the captain will be seen. But we know his record in the IPL.
Considering the match is in Chepauk, CSK will go with three spinners: Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, and Noor Ahmad, and two pacers: Matheesha Pathirana and Khaleel Ahmed.
