The Big Sky Conference-leading Idaho State softball team swept Northern Colorado in a doubleheader Friday afternoon, including run-rule victory in the second game at Miller Ranch Stadium in Pocatello.
Idaho State beat UNC 8-5 in Game 1 behind a three-run third inning, and the Bengals won the second game 10-2 in five innings. If one team leads by eight or more runs after five innings, the plate umpire may declare the run rule according to the NCAA.
Idaho State, 4-1 in the Big Sky and 23-13 overall, scored seven runs in the bottom of the fourth of Game 2 to take a 9-0 lead.
Weber State is in second place in the conference with a 3-1 record as of Friday evening. UNC is in third place at 3-2. The Bears are 12-23 overall.
ISU led 3-1 starting the third inning of the first game. Bengals shortstop Camryn McDonald reached on an error by left fielder Abby Gaona with two out and the bases loaded, bringing in three unearned runs for a 6-1 lead.
UNC cut the lead in half with two runs in the top of the fifth, but Idaho State added a run in both the bottom half of the fifth and sixth innings.
Idaho State pitcher Lizzy Tommasini (6-4) gave up seven hits, allowing five runs, three earned runs with four strikeouts and four walks. Idaho State committed three errors.
UNC first baseman Amailee Morales had three hits with a double and three RBI. Katie Walling and Jazzy Longo also doubled. Longo had two RBI, and Gaona hit a solo home run to tie the game 1-1 in the second.
Isabelle DiNapoli (6-8) took the loss for the Bears after allowing five earned runs, giving seven hits with six walks and strikeout.
Idaho State had 15 hits against four UNC pitchers in Game 2. Starter Anna Wilming (5-9) took the loss, allowing two runs on two hits with a strikeout and two walks in 2 1/2 innings. Junior reliever Grace Algrim allowed six runs on six hits in one inning of work.
The teams play the final game of the series at noon Saturday.
