The summer of Shreyas Iyer is about to get better ...0

Sport by : (Inside sport) -

Shreyas Iyer has played competitive cricket for over a decade. And even he would realise there has never been a better time to be Shreyas Iyer.

Back in 2023, Iyer was in excruciating pain and needed back surgery. He faced the danger of missing out on the ODI World Cup. But he didn’t. He played, and he scored 530 runs, including 2 hundreds and 3 fifties, from 11 matches.

A few months later, Shreyas Iyer led Kolkata Knight Riders to their third IPL championship, ending a 10-year title drought.

At the beginning of 2025, Iyer was perhaps not even in the fray to make the ODI XI for the series against England until Virat Kohli pulled up with an injury. Iyer’s response: 59, 44 and 78 as India steamrolled England 3-0.

In the Champions Trophy, which followed, Iyer was on fire and made 56, 79, 45 and 48. He played a crucial role in another ICC title triumph for India.

A new chapter with Punjab Kings

It is this man that KKR could not retain. A captain who won them the IPL and one of the world’s most consistent ODI batters were released. Iyer, speaking to The Indian Express at Idea Exchange, said something about a lack of communication, and he parted ways with the franchise. It was mutual, but ” no concrete effort in having a retention talk” left Iyer obviously disappointed.

Cut to IPL 2025, KKR are watching more of the Shreyas Iyer story unfolding – for a different franchise.

Iyer, the new Punjab Kings captain, smashed an unbeaten 97 and an unbeaten 52 in his first two matches of IPL 2025- PBKS won both of them. He has already scored 149 runs, nearly 50 per cent of his total tally of 351 last year. And it seems like Iyer is just warming up.

KKR have struggled and though they found a new captain in Ajinkya Rahane – an immensely capable leader, the side seems to have lost its mojo this year. They were crushed at home by RCB and after the defeat to MI, the defending champions are already not really looking like defending champions, despite their thrashing of Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Besides, KKR have pitch issues to deal with.

Rising to the Peak

PBKS, on the other hand, under Shreyas Iyer, are looking like a force to reckon with. They have never won the IPL. But coach Ricky Ponting, who worked with Iyer at Delhi Capitals, wants to make this the greatest PBKS team in IPL.

Shreyas Iyer has so far responded well. He set the tone in the first game when he was ready to sacrifice a hundred so Shashank Singh could go hammer and tongs in the last over. That eventually made the difference in a high-scoring game.

Shreyas Iyer is on his way to peaking in his career. Sports are fragile, and players know they have to make the best of their form at any given time. Iyer wants to bat at No.3 in the IPL with an aim to make a mark for India at that position.

Shreyas Iyer has travelled the different paths of life in his international career. He scored a hundred on debut and then found himself at a spot where he was worried a back injury could derail his World Cup dream.

Today, Iyer is the captain to watch out for in the IPL – imagine winning 2 titles with different teams in successive years. And, imagine this Shreyas Iyer walking in to bat at No.3 for India in an already scary T20I line-up.
