From there, there was no stopping them.

Musk poured in more than $100m to help Trump win, and appeared on stage with him at Mar-a-Lago after he secured a second term.

Nobody really thought Musk and his team of 20-something coders would be less loose on so much of the government infrastructure – firing workers at will, chaotically closing down entire departments and allegedly threatening everything from the safety of the country’s nuclear weapons stockpile, to combatting the spread of HIV/AIDS in Africa.

When DOGE was established, it was said it would look to save the tax-payer as much as $1trn.

However many of the “receipts” posted were taken down after the media, and Democrats, pointed out they were not as claimed.

But while some have doubted such figures, questions have also been raised about the cost of firing so many people and how much the government will have to pay those dispatched workers.

While frustration with Musk had been growing at the White House and among senior Republicans for some time, it is not clear what was the final factor for Trump to make his decision.

Trump hinted this week Musk was on his way out.

After the results of Tuesday’s Wisconsin Supreme Court race in which Musk ploughed $20m but where the Republican lost, it seems the sheen may be fading even for Trump.

Now Musk will be heading back to Tesla, whose stock has fallen and whose dealerships have been attacked across the US and around the world, in violent protest about the Trump administration’s actions.

In truth, it was always a bit of a miracle that two such shameless attention seekers could get along for so long and share the same spotlight.
